WEIGHT MANAGEMENT GUIDE
Retatrutide: what we know so far
Retatrutide is an investigational medicine being studied for weight management. It acts on three hormone receptors, but it has not been approved for human use in the UK. This guide explains the research, what remains uncertain, and how to seek advice about approved weight loss options.
Retatrutide is not available as an approved weight loss treatment. A qualified healthcare professional must assess whether any prescription medicine is suitable for you.

What is retatrutide?
Retatrutide is a medicine in clinical development. It activates the receptors for GLP-1, GIP and glucagon, three hormones involved in appetite and metabolism. Researchers are studying whether this approach can help people living with obesity and related conditions. It is sometimes called a “triple agonist.”
What does the research show?
Clinical trials have reported substantial average weight loss among participants receiving retatrutide. These findings are promising, but trial results do not establish that a medicine is suitable for everyone. Researchers continue to study its safety, longer-term effects and use in different groups before regulators decide whether to approve it.
Reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation. The full safety profile is still being assessed. There is no approved UK prescribing information or standard treatment schedule for retatrutide.
Is retatrutide available in the UK?
No. Retatrutide has not been authorised for human use in the UK. Products sold as retatrutide outside legitimate clinical trials may be unverified or counterfeit. The MHRA advises people to avoid unregulated sellers and to obtain any weight loss medicine only through a registered pharmacy with a valid prescription.
What approved weight loss options can I discuss?
Depending on your health and circumstances, a clinician may discuss nutrition and activity support, a specialist weight management service, or an authorised prescription medicine such as semaglutide (Wegovy) or tirzepatide (Mounjaro). Eligibility and availability vary. A prescription decision requires an individual clinical assessment.

Common questions
Can I buy retatrutide for weight loss?
No approved retatrutide medicine is available for weight loss in the UK. Be wary of products offered online or through social media, including products described as being “for research purposes” but marketed for human use.
Is retatrutide the same as Mounjaro?
No. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide and acts on GLP-1 and GIP receptors. Retatrutide also acts on the glucagon receptor and remains investigational. Trial results from different medicines should not be treated as a direct comparison of what an individual will experience.
Where can I get reliable advice?
Speak with your GP, pharmacist or another qualified healthcare professional. They can discuss established weight management support and assess whether a licensed treatment may be appropriate.
